Stay Away from Rock & Roll

Jason Ringenberg gets most of the attention when people talk about cowpunk/alt-country pioneers Jason & the Scorchers. After all… he was the lead singer, and it was his name out in front of the band. Most of the Scorch, however, came from the axe of lead guitarist Warner Hodges (pictured above). Hodges’ hard rock riffs provided the perfect balance to the twang in Ringenberg’s voice and really helped define the band’s sound.

Will Rambeaux is a songwriter/producer/artist who grew up in Louisiana but has been working in Nashville in various capacities since the 1980’s. Rambeaux co-wrote Faith Hill’s first #1 hit “Wild One,” and has also penned hits for artists such as John Michael Montgomery, Patty Loveless, and Kathy Mattea. In the 1980’s, Rambeaux fronted a band called The Delta Hurricanes that played the Nashville club circuit alongside artists such as Steve Earle.

The first track I’m sharing today features Will Rambeaux and The Delta Hurricanes enlisting Warner Hodges’ to help record a song called “Stay Away from Rock & Roll.” The track was recorded in Nashville as part of a session that took place at Treasure Isle Studio at the same time Emmylou Harris was recording The Ballad of Sally Rose. Rambeaux and his team were allowed to use the studio for free during off days in Emmylou’s recording schedule.

The first track here is “Stay Away from Rock & Roll.” That’s the song that features Hodges’ distinctive licks on lead guitar… and some really bad advice. The second, “Angelie,” comes from the same sessions, but is absent a contribution from Hodges. Rambeaux’s main band consists of Kenny Greenberg (Roseanne Cash) on guitar and Rick Rowell (David Olney) on drums.

As far as I know, these songs have never seen a proper public release. I must thank Bruce, a loyal WDVX listener/blog reader/session co-producer, for passing these songs (and the story behind them) along to me and allowing me to share them with you.
